More than just a book shop
BÀRD BOOKS is more than just a bookshop. Alongside the carefully curated bookshelves, it’s a place you can pop in for a coffee or pastry; somewhere to meet friends, make friends, do some work, read a book, write a book, listen to authors, hear some music – just escape. Bookshops are third spaces; “much-loved local haunts that are neither home nor the workplace, but which we rely on for a sense of community and everyday socialising… the lifeblood of our high streets and fundamental to our mental health.” [ROMAN ROAD LDN]. In the evening, the lights dim, and books provide the backdrop for a glass of something deliciously chilled.

![In x years from now no one will be able to say we didn’t exist. Memorialised for eternity in the latest edition of @hoxtonminipress ‘s ‘Opinionated Guide to East London’.
“You can really tell when a shop is run by people who genuinely want to create a welcoming community space, and Bàrd Books is exactly that.”

![Book club announcement for October. 📣
Perfectly timed for October, Penguin have launched a series of 9 books in their Weird Girl series - books by pioneering female authors that take you into the deprived, delectable depths of weird fiction - and our choice for this month’s book club is ‘The Gilda Stories’ by writer and activist Jewelle Gomez.
Originally published in 1991, ‘The Gilda Stories’ is a radically reimagined vampire myth; a “groundbreaking work of Afrofuturism before the term was even coined” [Guardian].
Louisiana. 1850. A young girl escapes slavery and is taken in by two mysterious women. Rumoured to be witches, the pair travel only at night, dress is men’s clothes and seem to know others’ most innermost thoughts. They make the girl Gilda.
Over the next 200 years, Gilda moves through unseen spaces, searching for a way to exist in the world.
For the month of October, with any Weird Girl purchase, you can get a bottle of the deliciously dark and thirst-quenching Garnacha Reverte for only £16 (usual price £18.50).
If you choose to join us for book club (tickets and book available in the shop), then we’ll be joined by Penguin publisher Orla Schätzlein - the power behind bringing these weird girls to light.](https://scontent-iad3-1.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.82787-15/560072350_17921505330175540_2388682903630026010_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_tt6&_nc_cat=101&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=18de74&efg=eyJlZmdfdGFnIjoiQ0FST1VTRUxfSVRFTS5iZXN0X2ltYWdlX3VybGdlbi5DMyJ9&_nc_ohc=SkU_LcxXuRYQ7kNvwHrMzZr&_nc_oc=Adm7wNqkv5FyDk200jnHlJnP_Urqp9q1Ryu7MQR8w1Ar5rnLew7cILScCfQL5Lg_w5o&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&_nc_gid=hD4T3B5Yl02yCeWUZ96exw&oh=00_AfjY_JC7MeQMlskS1LDrV-bh_nWEjHh_zApv_saqFRG0Hg&oe=6921D047)
